ICC Responds to Spread of Cholera

Medical experts predict a massive outbreak of cholera in Haiti as a result of Hurricane Matthew. Cholera is a deadly water-borne disease that can kill within hours if left untreated.

International Child Care is responding on the prevention level by educating the community about important hygiene practices and how to identify if someone should go to the hospital for treatment. Grace Children's Hospital can treat the symptoms and admits children to the inpatient ward with diarrhea, malnutrition, or dehydration.

International Child Care already has a strong relationship with the people in the community through Integrated Community Health Program, and the people look to ICC for advice they can trust.

“At the time when cholera first came to Haiti, there wasn’t much effect here because we had already been educated by ICC on how to wash our hands and only drink clean, treated water,” said Ella Lionel, a Jolitrou community member in northern Haiti.

International Child Care’s advice to Haiti’s community is important now in the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew. Educating about how to prevent the spread of cholera can save thousands of lives. Your donation today can save a life.
